Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza
Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza (1922–2018) was a pioneering population geneticist at Stanford University. His groundbreaking work on human genetic diversity and migration patterns fundamentally changed our understanding of human evolution and the spread of populations across the globe. His landmark book The History and Geography of Human Genes remains a foundational text in the field. At The Future of Science, Cavalli-Sforza brought his unique perspective on how genetics informs our understanding of human history and diversity.
Cavalli-Sforza’s research combined genetics, linguistics, and archaeology to trace the migration patterns of human populations over tens of thousands of years. He initiated the Human Genome Diversity Project, one of the first large-scale efforts to catalog human genetic variation. His statistical methods for analyzing genetic data laid the foundation for modern population genetics and forensic science. His work demonstrated that the concept of biological race has no meaningful genetic basis, a finding with profound social and political implications.
