Ian Tattersall
Ian Tattersall is a British-American paleoanthropologist and Curator Emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He has conducted fieldwork in Madagascar and is a leading authority on human evolution and primate diversity. His books, including The Monkey in the Mirror and Masters of the Planet, have shaped public understanding of our evolutionary history. At The Future of Science, Tattersall explored what makes Homo sapiens unique among primates.
Tattersall’s field research in Madagascar led to the discovery of several new lemur species, contributing to our understanding of primate evolution and island biogeography. His work on human evolution challenges the linear “march of progress” narrative, arguing instead that human evolution was a messy, branching process with many dead ends. He has been particularly influential in arguing that symbolic thought and language emerged suddenly in Homo sapiens, representing a qualitative cognitive leap that distinguishes us from all other species, including other members of the genus Homo.
